The first signal of traffic control in Switzerland was implanted in 1935 in Geneva, at the crossing of Stand street and Favon boulevard. It was named the "Chinese lantern" because of the restrained "eyes".
It had 4 faces containing each a needle which moved alternately in a red or a green zone.
A policeman was posted at the crossroads to help the users who were little used to this invention.
We came from all the city to go to this crossroads and admire the technological breakthrough it of this invention.
The device, offered to the city of Geneva by his manufacturer, stayed in service until 1948.
Today, the Swiss signals are a mixture of French, Germanic and Anglo-Saxon influences. We find French signals (bikes repeaters, monosignal pedestrian signals, traffic lights of French manufacturers), Germanic signals (mixed pedestrian boxes pedestrians / bikes), and signals of Anglo-Saxon inspiration (three-color pedestrian signals).
The traffic lights of Geneva have the peculiarity to have the yellow light flashing in case of dangerous crossroads, besides the other colors.
